Itinerary questions

Is 5 days enough in Belize?
Five days is enough to do justice to one region (cayes-only or mainland-only) or to get a taste of both regions with the mixed structure. It's not enough to comprehensively cover Belize. First-time visitors with limited time should target the mixed structure (3 mainland + 2 cayes or the reverse) for broader exposure. Repeat visitors or travelers with specific interests should focus on one region.
What should I do in Belize in 5 days?
Pick your structure first. For cayes-only: San Pedro or Caye Caulker base, with Hol Chan snorkeling, a Blue Hole or whale shark trip, and Caye Caulker day trip. For mainland-only: San Ignacio base, with ATM Cave, Xunantunich, and either Caracol or Tikal. For mixed: 2-3 days in San Ignacio (ATM Cave + Xunantunich), then 2-3 days in San Pedro or Caye Caulker (Hol Chan).
Should I stay on the cayes or the mainland?
Cayes for snorkeling, beach, and laid-back Caribbean experience. Mainland for Mayan ruins, ATM Cave, jungle, and adventure. Most first-time visitors with 5 days choose the mixed structure to experience both. Travelers with specific interests (deep-sea diving, archaeology, beach focus) should commit to one region.
How much does a 5-day Belize trip cost?
Budget trips run $700-$1,100 per person for 5 days, with hostels, simple food, and 1-2 tours. Mid-range trips run $1,400-$2,500 per person, with quality mid-range hotels, restaurant meals, and 2-3 tours. Luxury trips run $3,500-$8,000 per person, with resort stays and multiple tours often with private guides. Most travelers fall in the mid-range bracket.
Can you do Mayan ruins and the cayes in 5 days?
Yes, with the mixed structure (2-3 nights at each base). You can comfortably do ATM Cave and Xunantunich on the mainland portion, and Hol Chan snorkeling on the cayes portion. You'll need to sacrifice depth at each region, but it's a workable trip.
Where should I fly into for Belize?
Belize International Airport (BZE) outside Belize City is the only international gateway. Most travelers fly into BZE, then connect via domestic flight to San Pedro (15 min) or take ground transport to San Ignacio (90 min). Direct flights from major US cities (Miami, Houston, Charlotte, Dallas, Atlanta) and some Canadian and European cities operate to BZE.
Is 5 days enough for the Blue Hole and Mayan ruins?
It's possible but tight. A Blue Hole day trip plus Mayan ruins requires the mixed structure. The Blue Hole boat day is 12 hours and depletes your energy for the next day. Mayan ruins (especially ATM Cave) are physically demanding. Doing both in 5 days means at least 2 of your 5 days are full-tour days with limited downtime. Most travelers should pick one or the other for a 5-day trip.
How do you split a 5-day Belize trip?
The most common splits are 3 mainland + 2 coast or 2 mainland + 3 coast. The 3 mainland version gives you time for ATM Cave plus another major tour (Xunantunich or Caracol). The 2 mainland version is tighter, generally allowing for ATM Cave only as the major tour. The coast portion typically allows for Hol Chan plus one other reef experience.
What's the best 5-day Belize itinerary for couples?
For honeymooners or romantic trips, the cayes-only option at a resort (Las Terrazas, El Pescador, or Cayo Espanto on the north island of Ambergris Caye) with 2-3 tours and 2-3 beach days is the classic choice. For active couples, the mixed structure with San Ignacio jungle lodge (Black Rock or Chaa Creek) plus San Pedro resort gives variety.
Is 5 days enough for Belize and a side trip?
Generally no. A Tikal day trip can fit within Option B (mainland-only) if you replace Caracol with Tikal. Side trips to Mexico (Riviera Maya) or Guatemala (other sites) don't fit comfortably in 5 days. Travelers wanting Belize plus a meaningful side trip should plan 7-10 days minimum.

Five days in Belize is a real trip. Long enough to do justice to one core experience, not long enough to do everything. The decision that matters most is which Belize you want: the reef and cayes, the jungle and Mayan ruins, or a mix of both. Each version makes sense for different travelers. Each delivers a different trip.

Through ScalePact I work with operators across Belize and see what 5-day trips actually deliver versus what travelers think they’ll deliver before they book. This page is the three plans I’d hand a friend asking how to spend 5 days here.

Quick answer: Five days in Belize gives you three realistic structures. Option A: Cayes-only (San Pedro or Caye Caulker or both, focused on reef snorkeling and beach time). Option B: Mainland-only (San Ignacio for Mayan ruins, ATM Cave, and jungle, possibly with a day on the southern coast). Option C: Mixed (2-3 days mainland, 2-3 days cayes, the most common first-time visitor structure). Mid-range trip cost runs $1,400-$2,200 per person for 5 nights, depending on which option and what tours you book. Most travelers fly into and out of Belize International Airport (BZE), with domestic flights or van shuttles connecting onward.

Choosing Your 5-Day Structure

Three honest framings to consider:

Option A: Cayes-only (5 nights at the coast) — Best for travelers who want a beach vacation with reef snorkeling as the main activity. Skips the mainland entirely. Most relaxing of the three options.

Option B: Mainland-only (5 nights inland) — Best for travelers focused on Mayan ruins, jungle activities, and ATM Cave. Skips the reef and beach. Most active of the three options.

Option C: Mixed (3 mainland + 2 cayes, or 2 mainland + 3 cayes) — Best for first-time visitors wanting variety. The most popular structure. Trades less depth in each region for broader exposure.

The mistake travelers make most often is trying to do everything in 5 days. You can’t comfortably visit both San Pedro and San Ignacio, do ATM Cave, hit Hol Chan, see Xunantunich, and add a Blue Hole day. Some of this list will be rushed or missed. Pick a structure and stick with it.

Option A: Cayes-Only 5 Days

For travelers who want a Caribbean beach vacation with snorkeling, with everything else as a bonus.

Day 1: Arrival in San Pedro

Accommodation tier picks (mid-range):

Day 2: Hol Chan + Shark Ray Alley

Day 3: Caye Caulker Day Trip or Full-Day Reef

Reasoning: Day 3 is the variety day. Either explore Caye Caulker (highly recommended for first-time visitors) or go deeper into San Pedro’s offshore options.

Day 4: Blue Hole or Whale Sharks (Season Dependent)

For travelers without specific Blue Hole interest: Spend Day 4 as a relaxed beach day with a sunset sailing tour. Five days is short; not everything has to be a tour day.

Day 5: Departure

Total cost (per person, mid-range):

Option B: Mainland-Only 5 Days

For travelers wanting to focus on Mayan ruins, jungle adventures, and ATM Cave.

Day 1: Arrival in San Ignacio

Accommodation tier picks (mid-range):

Day 2: Xunantunich + Cave Tubing

Long but reasonable day. About 8-9 hours total.

Day 3: ATM Cave

Important: Must be 12+, physically fit, and able to be wet for 3 hours.

Day 4: Caracol or Tikal Day Trip

Two options:

Day 5: Departure

Total cost (per person, mid-range):

For first-time Belize visitors wanting both jungle and reef. The trade-off is less depth in each region.

Common splits:

The 2 inland + 3 coast version is what I’ll detail below. It’s the most-booked structure for first-time travelers.

Day 1: Arrival in San Ignacio

Same as Option B, Day 1.

Day 2: ATM Cave OR Xunantunich Combo

Choice depending on traveler fitness:

Day 3: Transfer Day + San Pedro Arrival

Day 4: Hol Chan + Shark Ray Alley

Half-day snorkel tour. Afternoon free for beach time, golf cart exploration, or a sunset sailing trip.

Day 5: Departure

Total cost (per person, mid-range):

Budget Variations

For travelers wanting to spend less or more:

Budget version (per person, 5 days)

Mid-range (per person, 5 days)

Luxury (per person, 5 days)

Which Option Is Right for You?

A decision tree:

Are you a snorkel/dive enthusiast? → Yes: Option A (cayes-only) → No: Continue

Are you specifically interested in Mayan archaeology, jungle, or ATM Cave? → Yes: Option B (mainland-only) → No: Continue

Is this your first Belize trip and you want variety? → Yes: Option C (mixed)

Do you have specific concerns (mobility, sea sickness, kids under 12)? → Modify based on Option A or Option C, skipping ATM Cave

Are you traveling in whale shark season (March-June) and want to do that? → Modify to include Placencia base for 2-3 nights
