3 trip options 5 days Curated by ScalePact
Five days in Belize is a real trip. Long enough to do justice to one core experience, not long enough to do everything. The decision that matters most is which Belize you want: the reef and cayes, the jungle and Mayan ruins, or a mix of both. Each version makes sense for different travelers. Each delivers a different trip.
Through ScalePact I work with operators across Belize and see what 5-day trips actually deliver versus what travelers think they’ll deliver before they book. This page is the three plans I’d hand a friend asking how to spend 5 days here.
Quick answer: Five days in Belize gives you three realistic structures. Option A: Cayes-only (San Pedro or Caye Caulker or both, focused on reef snorkeling and beach time). Option B: Mainland-only (San Ignacio for Mayan ruins, ATM Cave, and jungle, possibly with a day on the southern coast). Option C: Mixed (2-3 days mainland, 2-3 days cayes, the most common first-time visitor structure). Mid-range trip cost runs $1,400-$2,200 per person for 5 nights, depending on which option and what tours you book. Most travelers fly into and out of Belize International Airport (BZE), with domestic flights or van shuttles connecting onward.
Choosing Your 5-Day Structure
Three honest framings to consider:
Option A: Cayes-only (5 nights at the coast) — Best for travelers who want a beach vacation with reef snorkeling as the main activity. Skips the mainland entirely. Most relaxing of the three options.
Option B: Mainland-only (5 nights inland) — Best for travelers focused on Mayan ruins, jungle activities, and ATM Cave. Skips the reef and beach. Most active of the three options.
Option C: Mixed (3 mainland + 2 cayes, or 2 mainland + 3 cayes) — Best for first-time visitors wanting variety. The most popular structure. Trades less depth in each region for broader exposure.
The mistake travelers make most often is trying to do everything in 5 days. You can’t comfortably visit both San Pedro and San Ignacio, do ATM Cave, hit Hol Chan, see Xunantunich, and add a Blue Hole day. Some of this list will be rushed or missed. Pick a structure and stick with it.
Option A: Cayes-Only 5 Days
For travelers who want a Caribbean beach vacation with snorkeling, with everything else as a bonus.
Day 1: Arrival in San Pedro
- AM: Fly into Belize City (BZE) international airport. Take Tropic Air or Maya Island Air to San Pedro (15 min, $80-$120 each way). Most travelers find a direct connection from BZE arrival to a same-day flight to San Pedro within 90 minutes.
- PM: Hotel check-in. Beach time. Walk the village. Dinner at a beachfront restaurant.
Accommodation tier picks (mid-range):
- Las Terrazas (north island, beach resort)
- Belize Yacht Club (downtown, central)
- Pelican Reef Villas (south of town, condo style)
Day 2: Hol Chan + Shark Ray Alley
- AM: Half-day snorkel tour to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. The marquee Belize reef experience: schools of fish, nurse sharks, stingrays, sea turtles. Tour from 8 AM to 12 PM typical.
- PM: Beach time. Lunch at a beach bar. Optional sunset sailing.
Day 3: Caye Caulker Day Trip or Full-Day Reef
- Option 1: Water taxi to Caye Caulker for the day (45 min each way, $20-$30). Explore the smaller island, lunch at a local spot, swim at The Split, ferry back.
- Option 2: Full-day snorkel adventure to Bacalar Chico (northern Ambergris Caye), including reef snorkeling, mainland Mayan caves, and crocodile spotting.
Reasoning: Day 3 is the variety day. Either explore Caye Caulker (highly recommended for first-time visitors) or go deeper into San Pedro’s offshore options.
Day 4: Blue Hole or Whale Sharks (Season Dependent)
- March-June: Whale shark day trip to Gladden Spit (requires staying in Placencia or arranging from San Pedro, which is logistically complex). For San Pedro stays, choose Blue Hole on this day instead.
- December-April: Blue Hole boat day. 12-hour trip including 3 snorkel sites. Or helicopter Blue Hole flightseeing (90 min, less time investment).
For travelers without specific Blue Hole interest: Spend Day 4 as a relaxed beach day with a sunset sailing tour. Five days is short; not everything has to be a tour day.
Day 5: Departure
- AM: Late breakfast. Quick beach time or last-minute shopping.
- Midday: Fly to Belize City. Connect to international flight.
Total cost (per person, mid-range):
- Flights and ground transport: $200-$300
- Accommodation: $750-$1,200
- Tours: $400-$650
- Food and drinks: $250-$400
- Trip total: $1,600-$2,550 per person
Option B: Mainland-Only 5 Days
For travelers wanting to focus on Mayan ruins, jungle adventures, and ATM Cave.
Day 1: Arrival in San Ignacio
- AM: Fly into Belize City (BZE) international airport.
- PM: Van shuttle to San Ignacio (90 min, $40-$60 per person, prebooked). Hotel check-in. Walk into town for dinner. Brief stop at Cahal Pech archaeological site (walking distance from many hotels).
Accommodation tier picks (mid-range):
- Ka’ana Resort (boutique, just outside town)
- du Plooy’s Jungle Lodge (riverside, 10 min from town)
- San Ignacio Resort Hotel (in town, larger)
Day 2: Xunantunich + Cave Tubing
- AM: Xunantunich tour (30 min drive, 2 hours at site, including hand-cranked Mopan River ferry crossing).
- PM: Cave tubing on the Caves Branch River.
Long but reasonable day. About 8-9 hours total.
Day 3: ATM Cave
- AM-PM: Full day at ATM Cave. The marquee Belize experience for physically able travelers. 7-9 hours total: jungle hike, 3 hours in the wet cave, archaeological chamber with Mayan skeletal remains.
- Evening: Recovery dinner at one of San Ignacio’s better restaurants.
Important: Must be 12+, physically fit, and able to be wet for 3 hours.
Day 4: Caracol or Tikal Day Trip
Two options:
- Option 1: Caracol (Belize’s largest Mayan site). Full day with rough drive (3 hours each way on partly unpaved road) but worth it for archaeology enthusiasts. The drive passes through Mountain Pine Ridge.
- Option 2: Tikal (Guatemala). Full day across border for the largest and most famous Mayan site in the region. 12-13 hours total.
Day 5: Departure
- AM: Brief breakfast. Pack and check out.
- Midday: Van shuttle back to Belize City airport (90 min). International flight.
Total cost (per person, mid-range):
- Flights and ground transport: $150-$250
- Accommodation: $500-$900
- Tours: $500-$800
- Food and drinks: $200-$350
- Trip total: $1,350-$2,300 per person
Option C: Mixed 5 Days (Most Popular)
For first-time Belize visitors wanting both jungle and reef. The trade-off is less depth in each region.
Common splits:
- 2 nights San Ignacio + 3 nights San Pedro
- 3 nights San Ignacio + 2 nights San Pedro/Caye Caulker
- 2 nights San Ignacio + 3 nights Placencia (more atypical, suits whale shark season visitors)
The 2 inland + 3 coast version is what I’ll detail below. It’s the most-booked structure for first-time travelers.
Day 1: Arrival in San Ignacio
Same as Option B, Day 1.
Day 2: ATM Cave OR Xunantunich Combo
Choice depending on traveler fitness:
- For physically able travelers (most popular): Full-day ATM Cave. The marquee mainland experience.
- For travelers with limitations: Xunantunich morning + cave tubing afternoon combo.
Day 3: Transfer Day + San Pedro Arrival
- AM: Final breakfast in San Ignacio. Van shuttle to Belize City (90 min).
- Midday: Tropic Air flight to San Pedro (15 min).
- PM: Hotel check-in in San Pedro. Beach time. Dinner.
Day 4: Hol Chan + Shark Ray Alley
Half-day snorkel tour. Afternoon free for beach time, golf cart exploration, or a sunset sailing trip.
Day 5: Departure
- AM: Beach time or shopping.
- Midday: Flight from San Pedro to Belize City airport. International flight.
Total cost (per person, mid-range):
- Flights and ground transport: $250-$400 (more transfers)
- Accommodation: $650-$1,100
- Tours: $400-$650
- Food and drinks: $250-$400
- Trip total: $1,550-$2,550 per person
Budget Variations
For travelers wanting to spend less or more:
Budget version (per person, 5 days)
- Hostels and budget guesthouses ($30-$60/night)
- Fewer tours (one major per stay, e.g., just ATM Cave OR just Hol Chan)
- Local food, simple restaurants
- Bus and water taxi for transfers (no domestic flights)
- Total: $700-$1,100 per person
Mid-range (per person, 5 days)
- Mid-range hotels and lodges ($120-$200/night)
- 2-3 major tours
- Mix of local and international restaurants
- Some domestic flights, some shuttles
- Total: $1,400-$2,500 per person
Luxury (per person, 5 days)
- Resorts and luxury lodges ($300-$800/night)
- 3-4 major tours, often with private guides
- Fine dining, in-room dining at resorts
- Domestic flights throughout, private transfers
- Total: $3,500-$8,000 per person
Which Option Is Right for You?
A decision tree:
Are you a snorkel/dive enthusiast?
→ Yes: Option A (cayes-only)
→ No: Continue
Are you specifically interested in Mayan archaeology, jungle, or ATM Cave?
→ Yes: Option B (mainland-only)
→ No: Continue
Is this your first Belize trip and you want variety?
→ Yes: Option C (mixed)
Do you have specific concerns (mobility, sea sickness, kids under 12)?
→ Modify based on Option A or Option C, skipping ATM Cave
Are you traveling in whale shark season (March-June) and want to do that?
→ Modify to include Placencia base for 2-3 nights
What Doesn’t Fit in 5 Days
Honest about what gets cut:
- All Mayan ruins. Pick one or two; don’t try to visit all of Xunantunich, Caracol, Lamanai, and Altun Ha.
- Both cayes deeply. You can visit Caye Caulker as a day trip from San Pedro but won’t experience either island fully if you split.
- The Blue Hole + ATM Cave + Hol Chan + Lamanai. Four major tours in 5 days is too many. Two is plenty; three is the maximum.
- Hopkins or Placencia + the cayes + the mainland. Multiple coastal destinations don’t fit cleanly in 5 days.
- A side trip to Tikal + Belize sites. Tikal alone is a full day. Adding it to Option B works; adding to Option C is too much.
For longer trips, see the 7-day Belize itinerary.
