A note from the curator

I work with several operators running Altun Ha day trips and combos through ScalePact. The site itself is straightforward — a medium-sized Mayan ceremonial center occupied between roughly 200 BC and 900 AD, with two plazas, 13 visible structures, and two climbable pyramids you can walk in 60–90 minutes.

The decisions actually worth thinking about are which version to book (Altun Ha alone vs. the cave-tubing or Belize Zoo combo) and whether a cruise-line excursion is worth the premium over an independent operator. The name itself means “Rockstone Water” in Yucatec Maya, after the nearby pond and limestone bedrock.

Bottom line: For cruise passengers and short-on-time travelers, this is the realistic Mayan ruin choice. For the full comparison across every major site, see the Belize Mayan ruins tours guide.

From the curator

This is one of the experiences I send first-time visitors to. The operators we work with on this trip consistently get repeat bookings — clean equipment, professional guides, on-time pickup. The "Premium small-group" variant is worth the upgrade if you're sensitive to group size.

The story

The Jade Head and the Belikin connection

In 1968, archaeologist David Pendergast was excavating Tomb B-4/7 inside the Sun God Temple. He found a small jade head, about 15 centimeters tall and 4.4 kilograms, depicting Kinich Ahau, the Mayan Sun God.

It is the largest carved jade artifact ever discovered in the Mayan world — larger pieces of jade exist, but none carved with comparable detail. The Jade Head is now kept in the Belize Central Bank vault and rarely displayed; a replica sometimes appears at the Museum of Belize.

The Belikin Beer label features a stylized image of this same Sun God Temple. Belikin is Belize's national beer, and the silhouette has appeared on bottles continuously since the 1970s — making Altun Ha one of the most-photographed Mayan structures even among people who never set foot in the country.

The largest carved jade artifact ever found in the Mayan world — and it came out of the temple on your beer bottle.

How it stacks up against the bigger sites.

The comparison most travelers should make, especially cruise visitors weighing a half-day against a full-day trip.

Pick this if

You're on a cruise day, have limited time in Belize, and want a manageable Mayan experience without long driving.

For cruise passengers with 5–7 hour port times, Altun Ha is the right choice: the day fits comfortably and you avoid the timing risk of more ambitious tours.

How to visit

Four ways to do Altun Ha.

From the standard half-day to a self-guided drive — pick the version that fits your day.

02

Altun Ha + cave tubing combo

6–7 hours $130–$180 pp

The most popular cruise combo. Ruins in the morning, cave tubing on the Caves Branch River in the afternoon. Best for 7+ hour port times.

03

Altun Ha + Belize Zoo combo

5–6 hours $110–$160 pp

The family-friendly option. Ruins, then rescued native animals — jaguars, tapirs, scarlet macaws. Manageable for all ages.

04

Self-guided visit

2–3 hours on site $10 entry

Drive yourself or take a taxi, pay the gate fee, walk at your own pace. Same visual experience; you miss the guide's archaeological context and lunch logistics.

Plan your visit

Timing, cost, and where to base.

When to visit

Open 8 AM–5 PM daily. Early morning (8–10 AM) is coolest and quietest; cruise groups arrive 9–11 AM. December–April is driest. Rain makes the steep stairs slippery.

What it costs

Half-day $80–$130 pp; cave-tubing combo $130–$180; zoo combo $110–$160; cruise-line excursion $130–$200. Self-guided is just the $10 entry plus transport. Tip the guide $5–$10.

Where to base

Belize City is the standard base (Fort George for safe waterfront walking), or visit straight from the cruise ship. Too far for a day trip from the cayes, Placencia, or Hopkins.

Good to know

Tour questions, answered

Is Altun Ha worth visiting?
Yes for cruise passengers and travelers with limited time in Belize. Altun Ha is the most efficient Mayan ruin to visit in the country, manageable in a 4-5 hour half-day from Belize City. It's not the most spectacular site (Xunantunich, Lamanai, and Caracol are larger and more impressive), but the combination of historical significance (Jade Head discovery), the Belikin Beer connection, and manageable logistics makes it the right pick for a specific kind of traveler.
How long is the Altun Ha tour?
The full half-day tour from Belize City runs 4-5 hours total: 60-90 minutes drive each way, 90-120 minutes at the site, plus lunch and transitions. Combos with cave tubing or the Belize Zoo extend this to 6-7 hours total. Self-guided visitors can spend 2-3 hours at the site itself.
Can you climb Altun Ha?
Yes. Both major pyramids at Altun Ha are climbable. The Sun God Temple (Structure B-4) is the marquee climb at 16 meters tall, with steep but well-maintained stone steps. Structure A-1 (Temple of the Green Tomb) is also climbable and offers a good view. The climbing is moderate; less demanding than Xunantunich's El Castillo. Vertigo-prone visitors can stop at mid-level platforms.
What was found at Altun Ha?
The most famous discovery is the Jade Head, a 15-centimeter carved jade depiction of the Mayan Sun God Kinich Ahau, found in 1968 inside Tomb B-4/7 at the Sun God Temple. It weighs 4.4 kilograms and is the largest carved jade artifact ever found in the Mayan world. The head is now stored in the Belize Central Bank vault. The site has also yielded pottery, stelae, and dozens of smaller artifacts during ongoing excavations.
How do you get to Altun Ha?
Most visitors take a guided tour from Belize City, which includes pickup, the 60-90 minute drive, the tour, and return. Independent visitors can drive themselves (rental car) or take a registered taxi from Belize City. The site is located off the Old Northern Highway about 35 miles north of Belize City; signs from the highway mark the turnoff.
Is Altun Ha better than Lamanai?
Different experiences. Altun Ha is smaller, closer to Belize City, faster to visit, and the standard cruise-day choice. Lamanai is larger, has the 90-minute river cruise approach, more reliable howler monkey sightings, and takes a full day. For cruise passengers with 5-7 hour port times, Altun Ha is better. For travelers with 8+ hour port times or staying overnight in Belize City, Lamanai is more rewarding.
What does Altun Ha mean?
"Altun Ha" means "Rockstone Water" or "Stone Water" in Yucatec Maya. The name refers to the nearby pond (Rockstone Pond) and the limestone bedrock that defines the site's geography. The original Mayan name is unknown; "Altun Ha" was assigned during the 20th century based on the local geographic features and the Maya language still spoken in the region.
How much does the Altun Ha tour cost?
A half-day Altun Ha tour from Belize City costs $80 to $130 per person, including transport, site entry, and guide. Combination tours with cave tubing or the Belize Zoo run $130 to $180 per person. Cruise-line excursions cost $130 to $200 per person. Self-guided visitors pay only the $10 USD site entry plus their own transport.
Can you visit Altun Ha on a cruise day?
Yes, Altun Ha is the most popular cruise-day Mayan ruin from Belize City. The 4-5 hour total day comfortably fits a standard 8-hour port time with significant buffer. Many cruise excursions combine Altun Ha with cave tubing or the Belize Zoo for a fuller day. Most cruise lines and independent operators run Altun Ha trips during port days.
Is Altun Ha worth it from a cruise ship?
Yes, for cruise passengers who want a Mayan ruin experience without committing to a longer day like Lamanai or attempting an ambitious Xunantunich trip from Belize City. Altun Ha delivers manageable logistics, two climbable pyramids, the Jade Head historical context, and the famous Belikin Beer label connection. It's the realistic Mayan ruin choice for most cruise days.
